Mold Allergy Season for West Coast
Dear Dr. Kagen,
I read you answer to the mold allergy season question from Kevin in Pa.
Would you tell me when Seattle, Washington's mold season begins and ends?
On your daily allergy map for mold spores the west coast always seems to
have less
mold spore present. Is this true?
Thank you,
Suzanne
Dear Suzanne,
Thanks for asking about mold spores in the Northwestern U.S.
It is true that the mold spore aeroallergens as measured by volumetric air
sampling are more often than not lower than other regions in the USA. The
likely reason for this is the proximity to the Pacific and its westerly air
flow patterns combined with the soil in the region which supports less mold
than for example the Mid-Western regions. The outdoor mold allergy season
in Seattle usually begins in March and peaks in the Fall months of August
and September.
I hope this helps.
Good luck.
Steve Kagen, M.D.
