Mold Spores During Rain
Dear Dr. Kagen--
Today in New York City it rained quite hard and subdued
the tree pollen. However, when it rains I feel a somewhat severe
allergic reaction in my lungs and eyes and have been told that an
onslaught of molds spores (to which I am allergic) is the cause. Is
this true.
Thank you in advance.
John A. McQ.
Thanks for asking about mold allergy and rainfall.
It is true that just before it begins to rain there is an updraft current
which elevates the mold spores that otherwise are found nearest to the ground.
For this reason, many mold allergic patients will experience a flare of
sinus headaches and nasal symptoms shortly before it rains.
Hope this info is helpful to you.
Good luck.
Steve Kagen, M.D.
