Flu Shots for Children with Asthma
My 4-yr old suffers from asthma. Recently, my doctor suggested that she be given a flu shot. Is this recommended for asthmatics?
Thanks for asking about influenza immunizations in children with asthma.
In general, asthma patients should receive yearly influenza vaccinations
in order to reduce their chances of experiencing a serious viral lung
infection when this respiratory agent moves into the area.
Asthma patients are more prone to get viral infections if they are poorly
controlled and have excessive mucus within the lungs prior to becoming
infected. I like to explain it to my patients this way, "Wet heads get sick"
and "Dry sinuses stay healthy".
Children may also benefit from influenza vaccination, but you really must
discuss your childs situation with your doctor as all patients are unique
and require different recipes for good health. In my clinical experience,
healthy asthmatic children do not need influenza injections if they are
really well controlled with anti-asthmatic medications.
Be certain to discuss your child's case with your doctor.
Good luck.
