Cat Allergens
Dear Dr. Kagen,
I am hoping that you can answer an allergy question for me.
Are cat allergens airborne? In other words, if I have a cat at home and
visit someone in their home who is allergic to cats, will it cause the
cat allergic person to have allergies? I am fastidious about keeping my
clothes, home and myself free of any cat hair.
I would greatly appreciate your opinion.
Michelle B.
Some very sensitive cat allergic patients will notice that you own a cat,
especially if there are hairs on your clothing.
It is not the hair of the cat that causes allergic reactions. It is the
dander and salivary proteins that the cat "leaves behind".
The only way to know for certain is to visit your allergic friend and ask
him/her "how are you doing?"
Hope this info helps.
Good luck.
Steve Kagen, M.D.
